Sound travels faster through water than through air
The speed of sound is normally said to be 343.2 metres per second (1,126 ft/s). This is 1,236 kilometres per hour (768 mph), or about one kilometer in three seconds or approximately one mile in five seconds.
This speed of sound however, is the speed through air at 20 ?C (68 ?F). Through water sound travels with a speed of 1,484 m/s which is 4.3 times faster than through air. Through iron it even travels with 5,120 m/s; almost 15 times faster than through air.
