Debunked: The name Wendy was made up for the book “Peter Pan”
The name Wendy was not made up for the book Peter Pan
This is just another ‘fact’ that pop-ups regularly around the internet. And just like a lot of these ‘didyouknow’ facts, this one isn’t true… at all.
A quick search in the Census available on FamilySearch.org shows a big lists of people named Windy, Wandy and also ‘Wendy’ in the US and also 3 women named Wendy in Brittain, all well before 1904, the year J. M. Barrie wrote the play of Peter Pan; Peter Pan, the Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up. The book of the story would be published in 1911.
So the name Wendy was already in use well before the book of Peter Pan would be published.
