The U.S. only ranks 49th in life expectancy

Life expectancy in the United States

The United States currently ranks 49th in the world in overall life expectancy, according to a study published in the academic journal Health Affairs, slipping dramatically during the last decade.
This huge decline is highlighted by the fact that in 1999, the World Health Organization ranked the US as 24th in the world on life expectancy.

Life expectancy in the US and the health system

The report by Muenning and Glied found the prime culprit of the plunge to be America’s deteriorating health care system, marred by ever-rising costs and growing numbers of uninsured and under-insured individuals.

Noting that the United States spends over twice as much per capita on health care than other industrialized nations, it adds: “The observation that Americans are spending relatively more on health but living relatively shorter, less healthy lives has led some critics to allege that the US health care system is ‘uniquely inefficient.’”

In 1950, the United States was fifth among the leading industrialized nations with respect to female life expectancy at birth, surpassed only by Sweden, Norway, Australia, and the Netherlands. At last count, the United States was 46th in female life expectancy; 49th for both sexes

Over 850 different languages are spoken in Papua New Guinea

Papua New Guinea is the country where the most languages are spoken; over 850.

It is estimated that there are 6,912 different languages spoken in the world. You would think that China or India would be the country with the most different languages, while in fact it is Papua New Guinea.
With a population just under 7 million, this makes Papua New Guinea a very diverse country.

So how do they communicate with each other? There are 3 official languages in the country: Tok Pisin, Hiri Motu, and English.
Tok Pisin is an English-based Creole, a language that started out as a combination of two different languages and evolved into a distinct language of its own. In New Guinea, around 121,000 people grew up speaking Tok Pisin as a first language, but 4 million of the country?s residents are fluent in it.

If you need to be able to communicate in New Guinea, Tok Pisin is probably the best language to learn. Hiri Motu is a pidgin, a combination of the Motu language with English, Tok Pisin and various other regional languages. Very few people grow up speaking Hiri Motu, but approximately 120,000 New Guineans understand it as a second language. Because it is not spoken as a first language, it cannot be considered a Creole language at this time.

According to the New York Times, one of the world?s languages is lost forever every two weeks. New Guinea?s linguistic diversity has so far been protected by the inaccessibility of much of the country, as well as the fact that many people in New Guinea think of themselves as members of their tribe first and their nation second.

The earth is struck by lightning around 44 times per second

An old estimate of the frequency of lightning on Earth was 100 times a second. Now that there are satellites that can detect lightning, including in places where there is nobody to observe it, it is known to occur on average 44 times a second, for a total of nearly 1.4 billion flashes per year.

The place where lightning occurs most often (according to the data from 2004–2005) is near the small village of Kifuka in the mountains of eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, where the elevation is around 975 metres (3,200 ft). On average this region receives 158 lightning strikes per square kilometre (approx. 0.4 square mile) a year.
The Empire State Building is struck by lightning on average 23 times each year, and was once struck 8 times in 24 minutes

Roy Sullivan held a Guinness World Record after surviving 7 different lightning strikes across 35 years.
